The Local Defence Volunteers were formed in May 1940 and renamed the Home Guard in the August 1940 by Sir Winston Churchill. The force was set up to repel any invasion by German forces of either an airborne or seaborne nature. The Secretary of State for War (Anthony Eden) made a BBC broadcast asking that men between the ages of Seventeen and Sixty-five who were not eligible for regular enrolment, to offer their services in their countrys defence.Within a day this yielded a huge response beyond anyones expectations.

Over a quarter of million names had been registered to join. Barely six weeks later this number had risen to one and a half million.
Over the next four and half years until the Home Guard was officially 'stood down' in December 1944, Home Guard platoons met regularly in towns and villages throughout Britain. The men learned many skills including unarmed combat, rifle drills, camouflage techniques and many other soldiering skills that might be required in defending the Home Front.
